Megan, who works at the same homeless shelter and clinic that Michael now does, is a kind woman that has devoted her life to helping those who have it harder off than she does. Ignoring the fact that he has a wife, Michael becomes romantic with Megan. Michael helps her to achieve this goal, and she hopes that one day she will be able to see her son again. However, she is still a kind person, and wants to get over her addiction. When Michael quits his job as a lawyer, he meets Ruby, a charming homeless woman that is addicted to cocaine.

After doing research to find out about the homeless man who held up his office, he finds that that man had a motive, and realizes how much wealthy people ignore the lives of the ailing poor. Married to his wife Claire, who doesn't play that much of a role in the story, Michael is the main character and protagonist of the novel.
